JWV – Post 765 

Meeting Minutes from July 27, 2014 – held at JCC(FSP Board Room),  Charlotte NC

Attendees:

Barry Ross – Commander, Steve Russak – Senior Vice Commander,  Irwin Smolin,  Stefan Pienkny,  Eileen Schwartz, Bob Cooper, Marvin Hendler, Ron Liss, Marvin Callif         

Guests: LTC David Morgan, JROTC commander at Weddington HS

Old Business:

  1. 1.       (5-25)Veteran’s Panel –  A panel discussion around veteran’s day, 2014  and will be open to the public. The panel to include Stefan Pienkny, Stefan’s SF friend who served in Israel and CDR (Ret) USN Itzhak Brook , Professor of Pediatrics Georgetown University and a  possible American born non-Jewish veteran will be invited to be on panel, art student of Eileen Schwartz. Topic the Six Day and 73 Wars (6/22) Discussion about how to fund the event ( pay for speakers, room, etc)  .  Barry Ross also has a contact who has experience in Israeli and US military as a combat doctor- possible speaker.  (7/27) Group discussed that this might need to be postponed until an underwriter could be found or the Post is more financially secure.
  2. 2.      (5-25) Chaperones for Temple Beth El trip to Washington Post to provide two chaperons for TBE student visit to Washington, DC (Richard Simmons and one other).(6/22) Steve Russak expressed interest in serving as chaperone (7/27)  no update
  3. (5-25 )Mitzvah service project. Local B’Nai Mitzvah students  to interview living Jewish War veterans from WWII thru current operations. The project will combine art and history. Details to come later. (6-22) Eileen not at this meeting.  Will discuss next meeting.  Herm noted Mike Schreibman, TBE member, is is failing health and might be interested in doing an interview.  Herm to contact Mike.(7/27) Herb not at the meeting.  No update on Mike’s condition
  4. (5-25)  Construction of a Jewish War veterans military monument of the grounds of the JCC. Discussed the possibility of this (6-22)  Further discussion.  All agreed this was a long –term goal to coordinate with Shalom Park and due to need for fundraising.   Steve Russak to email Kevin Levine of Shalom Park to inquire about feasibility. (7/27)  Steve will email Shalom Park Exec Director  (8/23) Steve did reach out to Kevin Levine- no reply yet
  5. . (5-25) Visitations to Jewish War veterans who are in nursing homes or otherwise incapacitated.  6/22 – Bob to contact TBE and Temple Israel to see if they can share names of veterans in local nursing homes (7/27) no update – Bob not at this meeting
  6. 6.      (5-25)  Sponsor Jewish Boy/Girl Scout troops.
  7. 7.      (5-25) Sponsor a JROTC      (6-22) Barry contacted LTC Morgan of Weddington HS, who will attend the July meeting to introduce himself, and discuss what is involved in sponsoring his JROTC.   Some of the Post members are also members of AM Legion Post 235 that sponsors JROTC and provide scholarships to deserving students to attend leadership events. (7/27)  LTC Morgan gave a recap of the principles of  what the JROTC program at Weddington HS was centerd upon (values, leadership, golden rule, etc.) .  The Posts’s possible role as a supporter could be to sponsor a student award to be given at the end of the year, an award possibly centered around the values of our Post.  Post will discuss.
  8. 8.      (5-25) March in parades requires contacting NG/USAR for vehicles and driver assistance.(7/27) Barry to possibly contact someone who could assist
  9. (5-25) Fundraising – Barry Ross will follow up with Sara Schreibman of TBE for fundraising ideas and  Susan  Worrel of  Charlotte Jewish Federation regarding any funding we may be entitled to. (6-22)  Bob Litz to follow up with Federation regarding eligible funding for the Post.(7/27) not discussed – Bob not at the meeeting
  10. (5-25)  JWV convention in August – Discussion was had about Barry attending the National Jewish War Veterans’ conference in Charleston, SC in August.(6-22)  Barry cannot attend due to work commitments in late August .  Steve to check his work schedule and ask Rabbi Jonathan about any discretionary funds to assist with convention costs.  (7/27)  Steve to see if he can get off work to attend  (8/23)  Rabbi Jonathan did offer to assist with expenses, but Steve’s work schedule prevented him from attending.  Next Year’s convention is in Tampa, Fl

11.Bank Accounts – the Post needs a bank account established – Steve to investigate

12.  Outreach – need to get the word out that the Post has been reestablished.  Barry ordered cards from Vistaprint to place at TBE, TI and the JCC.  They look very good!  Steve will contact TBE and TI about having them announce the next meeting at their Shabbat services.  Barry will contact Barbara Thiede, the Ft Mill Rabbi and UNCC professor . (7/27)  Steve to contact TI brotherhood.  Stefan to contact TBE brotherhood.

13.Hosting the traveling JWV exhibit – discussed the possibility of Shalom Park hosting this exhibit – Herm to contact Holly Levinson to see about Barry speaking to the Shalom Park Board members about this(7/27)  not discussed – Herm not at meeting

14.Tour of Israeli military points of interest – Stefan asked if anyone was interested in traveling to Israel to see points of interest from a military perspective.  Response was positive.  Stefan to start looking into this.(7/27)  Stefan to investigate further

15Veteran Breakfast – Steve mentioned that each year the Carolinas Freedom Foundation sponsored a breakfast on the Friday before Veteran’s Day, and others expressed interest in attending this year.  Steve will email the Foundation about costs and availability of a table for the Post.  (7/27)  Steve contacted the foundation.    Tables are available or individual seats can be purchased for $60.

Members discussed options for programming and fund raising. Will follow up with a vote next month:

1. A panel discussion around veteran’s day, 2014  and will be open to the public. Discussion was had about Barry attending the National Jewish War Veterans’ conference in Charleston, SC in August.

Eileen Schwartz invited members to attend reception of a veterans’ art exhibit she has organized at the McDowell Arts Center in Matthews on June 15, 2014.
